The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)

We have a Royal Charter to promote the science and practice of building and construction for the benefit of society, and we’ve been doing that since 1834. Our members work worldwide in the development, conservation and improvement of the built environment.

We accredit university degrees, educational courses, and training. Our professional and vocational qualifications are a mark of the highest levels of competence and professionalism, providing assurance to clients and other professionals procuring built assets.

The Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors (FPWS)

In 1997 the Government introduced party wall legislation across the whole of England & Wales in the form of the Party Wall etc. Act 1996. 

The Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors was born out of a need for education and support for building surveyors and other professionals, but also to enhance awareness and provide advice and guidance to the general public.

If so you must find out whether the work falls within the scope of the Act. If it does you must serve the statutory notice on all those defined in the Act as ‘adjoining owners’. 

Determining if a particular building project is within the scope of the Act is often more complex than simply checking the general criteria stated above. Failure to correctly identify the status of your project could result in the building works being unlawful. If you are in any doubt you should always seek professional advice. 

Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE)

The Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) is a leading body for professionals specialising in the design, construction, evaluation and maintenance of buildings. 

Its members practise across the United Kingdom, mainland Europe and around the World. 

The CABE provides the prime qualification of Building Engineer, a title that exactly reflects the professional expertise of members. 

The Association was founded with the objectives to:

- Advance the knowledge and practice of each of the arts and sciences concerned with building technology,

 construction and repair of the built environment and the creation and maintenance of a high standard of professional qualification, conduct and practice.

- Encourage and facilitate co-operation between the construction professions.

The Pyramus & Thisbe Society 

The Pyramus & Thisbe Society is a learned society for professionals with a particular interest in matters relating to The Party Wall etc. Act 1996 and in the solving of all other similar neighbour issues. 

The Society seeks to advance knowledge of party wall legislation and procedure and to promote best professional practice in its application.

Whilst the majority of Pyramus & Thisbe Society members are surveyors, the Society also includes architects, structural engineers, solicitors, barristers and others with an interest in the subject and a commitment to observing high standards of professionalism, in conformity with the Society Protocols outlined
